Eddie Vedder is going to sing "Take Me Out To The Ball
Game" during the seventh inning stretch tonight. Eddie Vedder of Pearl
Jam. PEARL JAM. Eddie Vedder can go from singing "Black" and "Dissident"
to singing a song at a baseball game because he likes more than one
thing. He enjoys more than one thing. And THAT IS COOL. This is a really
important life lesson here for artists of all types.
I think
social media can be a tricky thing for artists who are not sure about
what they are doing. I see so many artists just doing whatever other
artists on social media are doing so they fit in, or because they think
it will sell, or because doing what everyone else does some how makes
your art more legit. I do not get how being the same as everyone else
makes you more money or more popular or more complete, especially in the
art world. Your art should be a reflection of YOU. I see artists
struggling to find one style that defines them forever. ONE STYLE?!
I
hope this is not something they are teaching in art school, because
limiting your self-expression is no fun at all. Part of being an artist
and loving what you do is being open. Open to new styles. Open to new
ideas. Open to trying new things. It is ok to love abstract art and also
love creating custom pet portraits for people. Chances are while you
are learning to paint eyes, you will learn a new skill that you can
incorporate into your abstract art. Don't put yourself in a locked box
and throw away the key. Do the opposite. Throw the door
wide-fucking-open and try it all. Sing "Black" from the top of your
lungs then roll into "...buy me some peanuts and crackerjack, I don't
care if I never get back.."
The more you try, the more you live.
