Our big mold removal and kitchen renovation got underway on wednesday morning and my months of tedious planning went all to hell. The thing was, I planned on nothing going right because nothing was going right. Nothing going right is pretty much our normal but it was the kind of not going right that was rubbing me the wrong way. We originally had no grand plan to renovate our kitchen. We had a broken garbage disposal which was not repaired properly (by a man) which caused a pipe to leak, which lead to mold, which lead to us having to have our kitchen ripped out so the mold could be removed. That broken garbage disposal was a kind of nothing that turned into a huge something. The Mold Guy (also a man) kept not getting back to me when I'd ask him if he would be doing certain types of demo and plumbing. He never gave me a final estimate on the reconstruction portion of the bid, despite me explaining our need to know for the budget, scheduling, etc. This annoyed the shit out of me. But, the office staff (women!) were all very nice and thorough and when it came to the mold part of things, were very helpful. So, when Mold Guy didn't return my calls or emails about prices, I hired someone else to do those things (THE GRANITE GUY) when the mold part was done since I didn't think Mold Guy would complete the renovation portion of the job (and he never said he would). Hell, I wasn't sure he'd even show up, since he never returned my call.
Mold Guy showed up and brought a crew with him and as he's walking in he says he knows he never got back to me but it would just be easier for them if they can just demo everything so it won't be in their way and they just won't charge me for it (then GRANITE GUY can do the rest). The everything he wanted to demo was what I hired someone else to do when the mold removal was done. Before I could even respond or decide what to say or do or think about it, hammers were flying and my sink was walking by me. But, my PLAN, my PLAN!!!!!
So, Mold Guy did what was easier for him which in the end made Clean Air Test guy unable to test today and he had to change his schedule, and now Granite Guy needs to reconfigure his whole plan based what Mold Guy did that we didn't expect. Wouldn't it just have been easier if Mold Guy had a plan to begin with? Thanks for being so considerate, Mold Guy. I'm giving you my extra especial sarcastic font today.
On the bright side, we didn't have to pay for the demo. On the dark side, this is annoying. Also, it means not only do we not have an oven or sink anymore, we don't have access to our microwave. NO POPCORN!!! That was for sure not part of the plan. I had planned on popcorn for dinner during this whole mess. Also, next time we have something break, I will hire a woman to fix it.
We've chosen our granite and now I'm on the hunt for the perfect paint color.
*Our kitchen is wrapped in plaaaaaastic, just like Laura Palmer's body.
