We had a house guest last night so I thought it was a perfect excuse to make cookies (as if I need an excuse). I've been craving these cookies our Nana used to make for us and I'd bought all the ingredients weeks ago in anticipation of my craving. I never really thought much about the recipe for these cookies until I was making them yesterday. I have made them many, many times and I have always loved how they are called "Linda's Favorite" in the cookbook Nana made for me. But, something made me stop and really look at the ingredient list, which reminded me of ambrosia salad.
I'm pretty sure these cookies (really, they are squares) were were born out of the worst ever PMS binge or our Nana was smoking weed. Look at the ingredients:
Graham cracker crumbs
Colored mini marshmallows
Salted peanuts
Powdered Sugar
Maple syrup
Water
Butterscotch Chips
The funny thing is it is the WATER that tipped me off. Mixing water, crumbs and maple syrup with anything seems like something you only do at 3 AM. Though, once when I really was on a PMS binge, I tried this recipe with just plain white mini marshmallows and it was gross. Just like with the Ambrosia salad, the mini colored marshmallows give these treats a surprising fresh bite! I've been looking on recipe sites to see if anyone else remembers their grandmother making these no-bake sweet-salty-butterscotchy bars. I haven't found them yet.
The world is missing out!
Little note: It seems our houseguest (my little brother who turns the big 4-0 on monday)) is a dog whisperer. The dogs next door never barked while he was here. The second he left, Bark City. Hmmmm....
Our brothers, Lee and Tod, have new Monk and Burn Notice books out this weekend.
